Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.
Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlikeappetite of what's next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.
When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.
Life is a struggle. I shall never forget the most striking part of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow' s poem -- A Psalm of Life: "In the world's blood field of battle, In the bivouac of life, Be not like dumb, driven cattle! Be a hero in the strife!"
Ludwig van Beethoven was a typical "hero in the strife". He was not only one of the greatest composers, but also one of the most persevering men. As a deaf man, he went on working with his strong will in the last year of his life, though he was not able to hear his own fine and original music. Another example of persistence in struggle is Deng Yaping. She once said that her technique came from continuous training, emphasizing the importance of daily practice to a player.
As a student, I seem to be in a boat sailiug against the current. I must make an effort to forge ahead. A little carelessness will result in being driven back. Indeed, learning is a struggle against idleness and carelessness. Following the examples of Ludwig van Beethoven and Deng Yaping, I shall take great pains to urge myself on, moving steadily forward like a heroic boatman in the rough sea of knowledge.
No Pains, No Gains
The proverb “No pains, no gains” means that you have to make great efforts if you want to achieve success, for nothing but poverty can be obtained without effort.
In history, there have been many famous people of great achievements. You may claim that they are geniuses. But behind their successes, they have made great efforts in carrying out their tasks. Einstein said “Genius is one percent of inspiration and ninety-nine percent of perspiration.” He had been working hard for many years before he finally worked out his theory of relativity. Thomas Edison experienced countless failures before he finally invented the electric bulb. Wang Junxia was able to win the world championship of long distance race only because she had many years of hard training. Therefore, diligence is the key to success. Doubtless hard work promises fruitful result. Everyone is awarded the right to work hard in order to reach his goal. Apparently, diligence is necessary to success. Happiness is nearly always a reward for hard work.
On the other hand, idleness is believed to be the root of all evil. Anyone who habitually likes idling but desires everything is daydreaming. We should be aware that if we dream away our precious time, when we wake up, it may be too late for us to achieve anything. So, as college students, we should never stop working hard so that we will remain successful in the future competitions.
Between the darkness of earth and heaven she was burning fiercely upon a disc of purple sea shot by the blood-red play of gleams; upon a disc of water glittering and sinister.
A high, clear flame, an immense and lonely flame, ascended from the ocean, and from its summit the black smoke poured continuously at the sky. She burned furiously, mournful and imposing like a funeral pile kindled in the night, surround-ed by the sea, watched over by the stars.
A magnificent death had come like a grace, like a gift, like a reward to that old ship at the end of her laborious days. The surrender of her weary ghost to the keeping of stars and sea was stirring like the sight of a glorious triumph.
The masts fell just before daybreak, and for a moment there was a burst and turmoil of sparks that seemed to fill with flying fire the night patient and watchful, the vast night lying silent upon the sea.
