Disease spread in many ways. An infected person can cough or sneeze on someone nearby, or they can spread germs through a handshake. But sometimes we pick up germs indirectly. A sick person might leave behind bacteria or viruses when they touch a door handle, for example. But what if those surfaces could clean themselves?

Two teenagers from Hong Kong asked themselves the same question. Now they’ve developed a door handle that can kill germs on contact.

The idea is simple: Every time the door is opened, the movement creates power that starts a germ-killing reaction on the handle. In lab tests, their system killed about 99.8 percent of the germs that they spread onto lab dishes covered with their material.

Research by others has shown that door handles in public areas are often home to lots of bacteria and viruses, notes 17-year-old Sum Ming(“Simon”) Wong. He and schoolmate Kin Pong (“Michael”) Li,18, wanted to design a covering for door handles that would kill germs.

After doing some research, they learned that a mineral called titanium dioxide is known to kill bacteria. It’s already used in many products, from paints to desserts. To make their covering, the teenagers made the mineral into a very fine powder.

Titanium dioxide kills bacteria best when lit by ultraviolet light, says Simon. UV light is found in sunlight. But UV light does not naturally shine on indoor handles or any used at night, so the teenagers light their door handle from within.

To make sure the light reaches the coated surface, the teenagers made their door handle out of clear glass, Each end fits into a bracket (托架). Inside one of the brackets is a strong light-emitting diode(LED). From it comes UV light.

And here’s the interesting part: The power that makes the UV light shine comes from opening and closing the door. The power from the door is then carried by wire to the LED inside the door handle.

The door handle system, Michael and Simon say, might cost no more than about (about 81 yuan) to build.

        24. The ways diseases spread are mentioned at the beginning of the text to ________.

        A. demonstrate how most diseases are spread indirectly

        B. remind readers of the importance of cleaning their hands

        C. explain how to kill bacteria or viruses effectively

        D. help to describe a new invention that prevents diseases from spreading

        25. Michael and Simon’s door handle __________.

        A. is too expensive for ordinary families

        B. is powered by the movement of its users

        C. works better at night than in the daytime

        D. is made of a metal that can take in UV light

        26. The LED is placed inside the brackets to _______.

        A. supply enough power to the handle system

        B. produce titanium dioxide to kill bacteria

        C. provide UV light to help titanium dioxide work better

        D. direct the UV light in sunlight to the coated surface

        A. Cautious B. Critical C. Enthusiastic D. Disappointed

        C

        California Condor’s Shocking Recovery

California condors are North America’s largest birds, with wing-length of up to 3 meters. In the 1980s, electrical lines and lead poisoning(鉛中毒) nearly drove them to dying out. Now, electric shock training and medical treatment are helping

        these big birds.

In the late 1980s, the last few condors were taken from the wild, and there are now more than 150 flying over California and nearby Arizona, Utah and Baja in Mexico.

Electrical lines have been killing them off. “As they go in to rest for the night, they just don’t see the power lines,” says Bruce Rideout of San Diego Zoo. Their wings can bridge the gap between lines, resulting in electrocution(電死) if they touch two lines at once.

So scientists have come up with a shocking idea. Tall poles, placed in large training areas, teach the birds to stay clear of electrical lines by giving them a painful but undeadly electric shock. Before the training was introduced, 66% of set-freed condors died of electrocution. This has now dropped to 18%.

Lead poisonous has proved more difficult to deal with. When condors eat dead bodies of other animals containing lead, they absorb large quantities of lead. This affects their nervous systems and ability to produce baby birds, and can lead to kidney(腎) failures and death. So condors with high levels of lead are sent to Los Angeles Zoo, where they are treated with calcium EDTA, a chemical that removes lead from the blood over several days. This work is starting to pay off. The annual death rate for adult condors has dropped from 38% in 2000 to 5.4% in 2011.

Rideout’s team thinks that the California condors’ average survival time in the wild is now just under eight years. “Although these measures are not effective forever, they are vital for now,” he says. “They are truly good birds that are worth every effort we put into recovering them. ”

        28. California condors attract researchers’ interest because they _____________.

        A. are active at night B. had to be bred in the wild

        C. are found on in California D. almost died out in the 1980s

        29. Researchers have found electrical lines are ________________.

        A. blocking condors’ journey home B. big killers of California Condors

        C. rest places for condors at night D. used to keep condors away

        30. According to Paragraph 5, lead poisoning _____________.

        A. makes condors too nervous to fly

        B. has little effect on condors’ kidneys

        C. can hardly be gotten rid of from condors’ blood

        D. makes it difficult for condors to produce baby birds

        31. The passage shows that ______________.

        A. the average survival time of condors is satisfactory

        B. Rideout’s research interest lies in electric engineering

        C. the efforts to protect condors have brought good results

        D. researchers have found the final answers to the problem

A 2-mile-wide tornado tore through the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore on Monday, killing at least 51 people including 20 children, destroying entire tracts of homes and trapping two dozen school children beneath rubble.

Rescue teams raced against the setting sun and worked into the darkness in search of survivors as the dangerous storm system threatened several southern Plains states with more twisters.

The Oklahoma medical examiner confirmed 51 deaths including 20 children, making it the deadliest U.S. tornado since one killed 161 people in Joplin,Missouri. Area hospitals reported at least 230 people injured, including at least 45 children.

Emergency crews searched the rubble of Plaza Towers Elementary School to look for two dozen missing children,Oklahoma Lieutenant Governor Todd Lamb said. The school took a direct hit from the tornado,Lamb told CNN.

Police and fire crews pulled some school children from the devastation,a KFOR television reporter said from the scene.

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center provided the town with a warning 16 minutes before the tornado touched down at 3:01 p.m. local time(4:01 p.m. EDT), which is greater than the average eight to ten minutes of warning, said Keli Pirtle,a spokeswoman for the center in Norman,Oklahoma.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration(FAA) imposed a temporary flight restriction that allowed only relief aircraft in the area, saying it was at the request of local police who wanted quiet to search for buried survivors.[:]

Oklahoma activated the National Guard, and the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency activated teams to support recovery operations and coordinate responses for multiple agencies.

Briarwood Elementary School, which also stood in the storm's path, was all but destroyed. On the first floor, sections of walls had been peeled away, affording clear views into the building, while in other areas, cars hurled by the storm winds were lodged in the walls.

While the school was a wreck, nearby playground clear equipment stood undamaged, though littered with rubble. Across the street, people picked through the remains of their homes, looking for any possessions they might salvage.

The number of injured as reported by several hospitals rose rapidly throughout the afternoon.

32.From this passage we can infer that .

A.this tornado is the most serious in history in the USA

B.this tornado led to 20 school children deaths in Oklahoma

C.this tornado isn't the deadliest one in history in the USA

D.this tornado hit entire tracts of homes and schools badly

33.What does the author want to show us in the 6th paragraph?

C.The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center should warn people of the tornado ahead of eight to ten minutes.

D.The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center had warned people of the tornado at 3:01 p.m.

34.Why did the FAA impose a temporary flight restriction in Oklahoma?

A.The weather there was not suitable for flight.

B.The flights weren't allowed to pass over Oklahoma.

C.People wanted quiet to search for buried survivors.

D.The injured wanted quiet to have a good rest in hospitals.

        35. Where may we see this article?

        A. In a story book B. In a government report

        Tips to Increase Your Productivity

Want to get more done in your day? Of course you do. 36. The good news is that everyone can increase the amount of tasks they accomplish in a day. Here are some tips to help you have a more productive day.

Make a plan for your day. Make sure you know how you want your day to go in advance, even before you start. 37. To work best, create the next day’s plan the night before so that every morning you spend time performing, not planning.

Break large tasks down into bits accomplished easily. Do you have a large project that’s just so big that you keep putting it off? Or maybe you’re just unsure of where to begin, so you put it off. 38. Therefore, you will feel a sense of accomplishment as you check the items of your list.

Always set your priorities (優(yōu)先事項). 39. Figure out what must be done, do that first and rank the rest of your work according to importance. If you don’t get to the items at the end of your list, it won’t be a big problem, and you can do them another time.

        40. If you are the most productive in the morning, that’s when you should hit it hard and do as much as you can. If you work better in the afternoon, take care of some things like emails in the morning and then accomplish the important projects in the afternoon. Keep on top of your work habits, and you’ll be more productive.

        A. Reward yourself if you are productive. B. Be aware of when you are the most productive.

        C. This can provide you a roadmap for the day. D. It’s tough to meet depressed people who are productive.

        E. It’s important to accomplish the most important tasks first.

        F. A good way is to break the project down into more manageable ones.

        G. To stay competitive in any industry, you need to improve your productivity.
