Lying in the sun on a rock, the cougar (美洲豹) saw Jeb and his son, Tom, before they saw it. Jeb put his bag down quickly and pulled his jacket open with both hands, making himself look big to the cougar. It worked. The cougar hesitated, ready to attack Jeb, but ready to forget the whole thing, too.
Jeb let go of his jacket, grasped Tom and held him across his body, making a cross. Now the cougar’s enemy looked even bigger, and it rose up, ready to move away, but unfortunately Tom got scared and struggled free of Jeb.
“Tom, no!” shouted his father.
But Tom broke and ran and that’s the last thing you do with a cougar. The second Tom broke free, Jeb threw himself on the cougar, just as it jumped from the rock. They hit each other in mid-air and both fell.
The cougar was on Jeb in a flash, forgetting about Tom, which was what Jeb wanted.
Cougars are not as big as most people think and a determined man stands a chance, even with just his fists. As the cougar’s claws got into his left shoulder, Jeb swung his fist at its eyes and hit hard. The animal howled and put its head back. Jeb followed up with his other fist. Then out of the corner of his eye, Jeb saw
Tom. The boy was running back to help his father.
“Knife, Tom,” shouted Jeb.
The boy ran to his father’s bag, while Jeb started shouting as well as hitting, to keep the cougar’s attention away from Tom. Tom got the knife and ran over to Jeb. The cougar was moving its head in and out, trying to find a way through the wall Jeb was making out of his arms. Tom swung with the knife, into the cougar’s back. It howled horribly and ran off into the mountains.
The whole fight had taken about thirty seconds.
21. Why did Jeb pull his jacket open when he saw the cougar?
A. To get ready to fight. B. To cool down.
C. To protect the boy. D. To frighten it away .
22. What do we know about cougars?
A. They like to attack running people. B. They hesitate before they hit.
C. They are bigger than we think. D. They are afraid of noises.
23. Which of the following happened first?
A. The cougar jumped from the rock. B. Tom struggled free of his father.
C. Jeb held Tom across his body. D. Jeb asked Tom to get the knife.

Federal regulators Wednesday approved a plan to create a nationwide emergency alert system using text messages delivered to cell phones.
Text messages have exploded in popularity in recent years, particularly among young people. The wireless industry’s trade association, CTIA, estimates more than 48 billions text messages are sent each month.
The plan comes from the Warning Alert and Response Network Act, a 2006 federal law that requires improvement to the nation’s emergency alert system. The act tasked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) with coming up with new ways to alert the public about emergencies.
“The ability to deliver accurate and timely warning and alerts through cell phones and other mobile services is an important next step in our efforts to help ensure that the American public has the information they need to take action to protect themselves and their families before, and during, disasters and other
emergencies,” FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said following approval of the plan.
Participation in the alert system by carriers----telecommunications companies----is voluntary, but it has received solid support from the wireless industry.
The program would be optional for cell phone users. They also may not be charged for receiving alerts.
There would be three types of messages, according to the rules.
The first would be a national alert from the president, likely involving a terrorists attack or natural disaster. The second would involve “approaching threats,” which could include natural disasters like hurricanes or storms or even university shootings. The third would be reserved for child abduction (綁架)
emergencies, or so-called Amber Alerts.
27. The improvement to the present system is in the charge of _______.
A. CTLA B. the Warning Alert and Response Network
C. FCC D. federal regulators
28. The carriers’ participation in the system is determined by _______.
A. the US federal government B. the carriers themselves
C. mobile phone users D. the law of the United States
29. Which of the following is true of cell phone users?
A. They must accept the alert service. B. They must send the alerts to others.
C. They may enjoy the alert service for free. D. They may choose the types of messages.
30. An alert message will not be sent if _______.
A. a terrorist attack occurs B. a university shooting happens
C. a natural disaster happens D. a child loses his way
31. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Cell Phone Alerts Coming Soon B. Cell Phone Alerts by Wireless Industry
C. Cell Phone Alerts of National Disasters D. Cell Phone Alerts Protecting Students
D
Should doctors ever lie to benefit their patient--–to speed recovery or to cover the coming of death?
In medicine, the requirements of honesty often seem dwarfed (變矮小) by greater needs: the need to protect from brutal news or to uphold a promise of secrecy; to advance the public interest.
What should doctors say, for example, to a 46-year-old man coming in for a routine physical checkup just before going on vacation with his family who, though he feels in perfect health, is found to have a form of cancer that will cause him to die within six months? Is it best to tell him the truth? If he asks, should the
doctor reject that he is ill, or minimize the gravity of the illness? Should they at least hide the truth until after the family vacation?
Doctors face such choices often. At times, they see important reasons to lie for the patient’s own sake; in their eyes, such lies differ sharply from self-serving ones.
Studies show that most doctors sincerely believe that the seriously ill patients do not want to know the truth about their condition, and that informing them risks destroys their hope, so that they may recover more slowly, or deteriorate (惡化) faster, perhaps even commit suicide (自殺). But other studies show that, contrary to the belief of many physicians, a great majority of patients do want to be told the truth, even about serious illness, and feel cheated when they learn that they have been misled. We are also learning that truthful information, humanly conveyed, helps patients cope with illness: help them tolerate pain better, need less medicine, and even recover faster after operation.
There is an urgent need to debate this issue openly. Not only in medicine, but in other professions as well, practitioners may find themselves repeatedly in difficulty where serious consequences seem avoidable only through deception (欺騙). Yet the public has every reason to know professional deception, for such practices are peculiarly likely to become deeply rooted, to spread, and to trust. Neither in medicine, nor in law, government, or the social sciences can there be comfort in the old saying, “What you don’t know can’t hurt you.”
32. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Whether patients really want to know the truth of their illness.
B. Whether patients should be told the truth of their illness.
C. Who benefits from deception.
D. Whether doctors are honest with their patients.
33. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. It is true that “What you don’t know can’t hurt you”.
B. Doctors believe that those seriously-ill patients need a family vacation first.
C. Truthful information helps patients deal with their illness in some cases.
D. Many patients don’t want to know the truth, especially about serious illness.
34. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. There is an urgent need to debate this issue openly.
B. There can be no comfort in the old saying, “What you don’t know can’t hurt you.”
C. The public has every reason to be cautious of the deception.
D. We need to discuss this issue in medicine, but not in other professions.
35. From the passage, we can learn that the author’s attitude to professional deception is _______.
A. supportive B. indifferent C. opposed D. neutral

It is excited to visit different places. As you travel, you will see beautiful sceneries and you can meet and make friends with people of different colors and races. Besides, you can get to know the customs and living habits of the local people. Today people are very fond of traveling that tourism has become one of the fastest growing industries in most countries. The main reason that people travel is, perhaps, for pleasure. For example, having been worked hard throughout the weekdays, people will go on a trip to the nearby mountains or beaches to have a good rest. For another example, spending a holiday travel abroad is especially satisfying experience for those who do not have much chance to be away from their homelands.
When people return back from their travel, they will generally feel fresh and energetic, ready to work harder. Travel is also one of the best means of learning. You may have read or hear about something, and you can never get an accurate picture of it until you see it for yourself.

A Ten-minute Break
Recently I have found many students remain in the classroom learning during the ten-minute break, which is designed for the students to take a rest and relax themselves. However, they tend to occupy themselves in learning rather than have a talk with their classmates or walk about. Obviously, they think it is a waste of time.
Actually, a ten- minute break is of great necessity. Just as the saying goes, all work and no play makes John a dull boy. Not only can the break help them get rid of the tiredness from the last 40-minute learning, but also they can get refreshed and well-prepared for the coming learning process after a relaxing break.
Therefore, take advantage of the ten-minute break to get a good balance between work and relaxation, and you can make sure of a high learning efficiency. Only in this way can learning become a pleasant and effective experience.
