        第一節(jié)(共15小題;每小題2分,滿分30分)

        A

With my hands and knees on the floor of the airplane, I was searching for an old lady’s missing hearing aid during the flight from Sydney to Los Angeles. It occurred to me that this may not be the most dignified posture for a Buddhist nun(修女).

I had seen the old lady from the seat in front of me as she walked up and down the passage with a flashlight. I asked a few times what was wrong, but she didn’t answer at first —– she couldn’t hear me. She was wearing a woolen coat. Judging from her accent, she came from Eastern Europe.

Do you know what hearing aids cost? Thousands, especially for the new tiny hidden-in-the-ear type she described. It takes a long time for an appointment to make new one and many doctor visits to get the thing adjusted right. Therefore, my dignity seemed less important than finding that hearing aid. But how does one find a tiny black object in a shadowy jet cabin ?

The lady wasn’t even sure where or when she had lost it. At one point, a couple off light attendants did a random search around the lady’s seat; I wasn’t impressed. They left suggesting that she search the seat of her previous flight! My flashlight turned up all kinds of small objects, bits of plastic, broken pieces of headphones. The old lady said that she gave up. Yet I couldn’t. After we landed, as passengers streamed past us, I insisted that the lady move aside while awaiting her wheelchair. Then I got into a real down and dirty search among the dust under her seat and on the floor.

Look! A little peanut-sized shiny black object caught the light of my flashlight in a floor crack near her seat. What a rush. “I found it!” With great astonishment and gratitude, the old lady responded, “I haven’t the words to express my thanks!”

        21. Why did the author put her hands and knees on the floor?

        A. She is a religious Buddhist nun.

        B. She helped the old lady look for her hearing aid.

        C. She fell down from her seat.

        D. She wanted to stand out among the passengers.

        22. What do we know about the old lady?

        A. She ignored the author’s question on purpose.

        B. She is an American.

        C. It was not difficult for her to get the hearing aid at all.

        D. She lost her hearing aid by accident.

        23. Where was the hearing aid found?

        A. Close to the old lady’ seat. B. On the previous flight.

        C. On the wheelchair. D. In another jet cabin.

        24. What is the purpose of the passage?

        A. To present the love from all people on board.

        B. To teach us how to find the lost thing.

        C. To tell us a story about kind help.

        D. To warn us to be more careful

        B

Alexis, 17, sat quietly in the passenger seat of her dad's car. She let her eyes lazily scan the landscape for wildlife. Then a deer came into view about 200 yards in front of them. "Dad, there's a deer there!" Alexis said. It was a male deer with sharp antlers (角) on each side of its head.

As the car moved closer, Alexissaw that the deer's head was bent toward the ground. Then she heard a scream and saw an arm fly up near the deer's head. Alexis realized the deer was attacking a woman.Sue, a 44-year-old mother, had been out for her morning run. The deer followed her and edged closer. "I knew I was in trouble," Sue says. She went to pick up a stick for self-defense, and the deer charged. It lifted her with its antlers and threw her into the air. Sue could feel blood flew down her leg.Within seconds, the deer had pushed her off the road.

When Alexis and her father pulled up, the deer was throwing Sue like a doll. Alexis looked into the woman's terrified eyes, and before her father had even stopped the car, the teenager jumped quickly out of the car and ran toward the deer. "I was kicking it to get its attention," she says. Then her father, who had followed his daughter, pushed the deer away from the women.

Alexis helped Sue into the car,and then applied a piece of cloth to Sue's injured leg. "We're going to get you to a hospital," Alexis said. Then she heard her father shout loudly. He had been knocked to the ground. Alexis took hold of a hammer from the car and ran to where her father lay on his back. She beat the deer's head and neck, but the blows didn't s careit away. "I was losing faith," she says. "A couple more strikes, Alexis," said her father. "You can do it."

Turning the hammer around, Alexis closed her eyes and beat the deer's neck with all her strength. When she opened her eyes, the deer was running away.

Alexis got in the driver's seat and sped toward the nearest hospital. After Sue was treated, she tearfully thanked her rescuers. "You expect a teenage girl to get on the phone and call for help," she says, "not to beat up a deer."

25.What was Sue doing when she was attacked by the deer?

        A .She was driving home.

        B. She was resting on the road.

JOHANNESBURG—They say cats have nine lives. Now a Chinese toad(蟾蜍) has joined that club of clever survivors.

South Africans are shocked at the endurance of a toad that got trapped in a cargo shipment from China to Cape Town, after jumping into a porcelain(瓷器) candlestick(燭臺) that was made there. South African officials reportedly planned to put down the creature, fearing it would cause harm as an invasive species if it were let go in the wild.

But the toad got a last-minute pardon. Mango Airlines, a South African airline, transported the toad on Friday to Johannesburg for delivery to an animal shelter, after officials decided to find a way to let the toad live. The two-hour fight was a breeze compared to the trip from China, a long way of many weeks and thousands of kilometers across the Indian Ocean.

Airline spokesman Hein Kaiser said the toad got “first-class treatment”, sitting in a transparent plastic container with escort Brett Glasby, an animal welfare inspector. There was even a ceremony, in which the toad’s boarding pass was handed to Glasby.

“He was the star of the show on the flight,” Kaiser said of the amphibious(兩棲的) passenger. “I think every passenger stopped to have a look.”

On landing in Johannesburg, the toad was brought out of its container for a celebrity-style photo shoot. Observers said the brown toad seemed like a cool customer. It belongs to the Asian Toad species, which breeds during the monsoon(季風(fēng)) season. It is believed to have survived the trip from China by hardening its skin to prevent it from drying out, and also by slowing its breathing and heart rate—methods that help the species survive in times of drought.

“We’ve had snakes in imported timber and scorpions(蝎子) in fruit. We were called because the toad was right inside the candlestick, and we had to break it to get it out” Glasby, the inspector, told The Star, a South African newspaper.

        29. If the toad is released into the wild, _________.

        A. it will make the locals feel shocked

        B. it might harm the native species

        C. it will lose its life in the wild

        D. it might flee into another country

        30. The toad was able to arrive in South Africa alive_________.

        A. because it escaped all attacks and hunts

        B. because it used to stop its breath in winter

        C. because it formed hard skin to protect itself

        D. because it was lucky to be given a chance

        31. It can be inferred from the passage that_________.

        A. sometimes animal are transported accidentally

        B. no one has seen such a big toad in Africa

        C. a candlestick is the best place for a toad

        D. droughts make toads live longer

        D

Before I studied psychology, I used to think that people would laugh when funny things occurred. While I was right about that, I discovered there are lots of other psychological factors that make people laugh other than the funny part of a joke. When someone laughs at a joke, ther e will usually be more than one reason that makes him laugh—and the more reasons there are, the more powerful the joke will be.

I was attending a stand-up comedy show in Egypt, and when the man started to make fun of pedestrians crossing streets, everyone laughed their hearts out. The main reason those people strongly laughed was that almost all of them felt angry towards pedestrians who crossed streets carelessly. The joke wasn’t only funny, it also made the audience feel that they were right about being angry at those pedestrians. That is, people were laughing both because of the funny joke and because of the happiness experienced as a result of the psychological support they got.

The better a joke makes a person feel, and the more it includes other psychological factors, the more the person will like it. For example, if you envy one of your friends, and someone tells a joke that is funny and, at the same time, makes your friend seem stupid, then you will probably laugh at it louder than if you weren’t jealous of him.

In short, we don’t laugh only when we hear something funny; we also laugh when we experience some kind of happiness that results from the other psychological factors involved in the joke. I strongly discourage making fun of anyone or belittling someone to make someone else laugh. All I want to explain is that if your joke supports a person’s emotions, he will certainly like it a lot.

        32. What did the author find out after studying psychology?

        A. Only good jokes make people laugh

        B. Many factors lead to people laughing.

        C. Funny things can m ake people laugh

        D. Laughter can make people healthy.

        33. Why did the audience laugh loud at the pedestrians?

        A. They played a trick on the pedestrians.

        B. The pedestrians behaved in a funny way.

        C. They could feel the pedestrians’ happiness.

        D. Their emotion was approved of by the show.

        34. What does the underlined word “belittling” probably mean?

        A. Annoy B. Blame C. Look down on D. Make up to

        35. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?

        第二節(jié)(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

        根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。

While going through life with the pursuit(追求) of money on our mind, we're often told that money can't buy happiness. But what truth is there in the saying? Is there a relation between money and happiness? 36

Humans are very sensitive to change. When we get a rise, we really enjoy it. But some studies have shown that in North America, additional income beyond 75,000 dollars a year stops impacting day-to-day happiness. 37 They often end up spending all the money, going into debt, and experience ruined social relationships.

So surely money can't really buy happiness. Well, recent studies suggest that the problem may actually be in the way that we spend money. 38 Studies show that people who spend their money on others feel happier. As for the people who spend money on themselves, their happiness is unchanged.

39 0ne experiment showed that instead of an organization writing a large check to a charity, dividing the amount up among employees, allowing them to contribute to a charity of their choice, increased their job satisfaction. Similarly, individuals that spend money on each other, as opposed to themselves, not only increase job satisfaction, but improve the team performance.

40 Interestingly, the specific way money is spent on others isn't important. Spending something on others is the important aspect of increasing your happiness.

        A. The same principle has been tested on teams and organizations as well.

        B. Money has more effect on the vast majority of people in the long run.

        C. Instead of buying things for yourself, try giving some of it to other people and see how you feel.

        D. And if so, how can we use it to our advantage?

        E. Almost everywhere we look in the world, we see that giving money to others is positively related to happiness,

        F. And while you're saving up for these greatest experiences, don't forget the daily joys in life.

        G. In fact, people who win a lottery often report becoming extremely unhappy.

        作文:

Dear classmates, Have you noticed the phenomena that more and more teenagers around us wear glasses? Some of them got short-sighted even at a very young age. This is because they don’t get a good habit of reading or they overuse their eyes watching TV or playing computer games.

But, how to protect our vision? What can we do for good eyesight? Perhaps there are some ways for me to keep good vision; however, taking regular outdoor activities is an evident solution. Secondly, eye-care exercises twice a day may not be neglected. Having a distant look at intervals during the class break is equally important. In addition, don’t read in light which is either too dim or too bright. Don’t read in the bed or in a moving car.

It is high time that we took quick actions to protect our vision!

        Thank you!
