Chinese railway experts have begun talks on building a record-breaking high-speed rail that will connect Inner Mongolia in the north to Hainan in the south.

According to the Shaanxi Development and Reform Commission, the proposed line will operate at a speed of 350 kilometers per hour.

Beginning in Inner Mongolia’s Baotou and running through southern Shaanxi, Hubei, Hunan, Guangxi and Guangdong, its final stop would be in Haikou on Hainan Island, China’s southernmost province.

Though the exact length of the proposed route has not been released, it will likely become the world’s longest high-speed rail line as the journey by road between Baotou and Haikou is about 3,000 kilometers long. Currently, the world’s longest high-speed rail line is almost 2300 kilometers long, running from Beijing to Guangzhou.

The proposed rail is part of China’s aim to create another “Silk Road of the 21st century” and improve the country’s transportation network while driving land development and urbanization in some provincial areas.

Many of the provinces through which the high-speed trains will travel are near major bodies of water, such as the Yellow River in Inner Mongolia and Shaanxi, the Yangtze River in Hubei and the south China sea, where the line would end. These high-speed trains will also take passengers to popular tourist destinations including Zhangjiajie, Xi’an, Guilin and minority areas in western Hunan and Hubei.

“The country is now shifting its focus and investing in the western regions and economically unenlightened areas, making up for China’s long debt to these areas,” Tan Yuzhi, professor of the School of Economics and Management at Hubei University for Nationalities, told local media. “ The project will significantly narrow regional disparities(差異) and solve minority issues.”

However, Deng Hongbing, director of China University of Geosciences’ Center for Regional Economic and Investment Center, said that if the north-to-south railway is to be constructed, there needs to be a sound ecological program in place to ensure the protection of these undeveloped and ecologically sensitive areas.

        24. What is the passage mainly talking about?

        A. Another high-speed rail line is being planned B. China has decided to invest in the western areas

        C. The train will speed up to 350 kilometers per hour D. China has built the best high-speed rail line

        25. Once the high-speed rail line is built, _____________.

        A. it will be the second longest high-speed rail line in China

        B. it will benefit the areas that it runs through a lot

        C. it will only transport goods D. it will do good to the environment alongside the line

        26. What does the underlined part mean in the seventh paragraph?

        A. Developed areas B. productive areas C. undeveloped areas D. Agricultural areas

        27. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that________.

        A. you cannot have your cake and eat it B. where there is a will, there is a way

        C. all things are easy that are done willingly D. it is as well to know which way the wind blows

        C

Most parents claim they want to teach their children the importance of honesty. But the truth is, most parents are lying liars.

A 2009 study found that parental lying is common. Some University of California, San Diego psychologists wondered whether such lies actually influence children. Are kids who get lied to more likely to lie themselves? The answer, the researchers reported March 17 in Developmental Science, is a big yes.

Leslie Carver and Chelsea Hays invited 186 kids between the ages of 3 and 7 into their lab. Upon arrival, some of the kids were told a bald-faced lie: “There is a huge bowl of candy in the next room. Want to go get some?” When the kids got to the candyless room, the researcher admitted that it was a ruse to get the kid into the room. When the other group of kids arrived, they were told simply that a fun game awaited them in the next room.

Next came the honesty test. With their back to the researcher, the kids had to guess which toy went with a particular sound. Just after that, the researcher left the room to take a phone call, leaving the children in perfect positions to cheat and sneak a look at the mysterious toy.

Most kids peeked at the toy, but those who had heard the candy bowl lie were a little more likely to cheat, a camera revealed. Later, the researcher returned and asked kids whether they had peeked. Of the kids who peeked, those between the ages of 5 and 7 who had been cheated with the candy bowl lie were more likely to lie themselves and say they didn’t peek than the kids who didn’t get lied to, the researchers found.

But it’s not clear why lying to a child makes that kid more likely to lie, Carver says. A simple explanation is that the children imitate how they were treated themselves. Another possibility is that the children lose trust in the person as soon as they realize they’ve been lied to. “The child says, ‘This person is a liar so I can lie too,’” Carver says.

        28. The purpose of Carver’s experiment is to find out ________.

A.how important it is to teach children to be honest

B.why parents lie to their children

        C.what makes children tell lies

        D.whether parents’ lies influence children

        29. The underlined word “peeked” in Paragraph 5 can be best explained as ________

        A. looked carelessly B. looked secretly C. checked quickly D. hid secretly

        30. What does Carver’s experiment show?

A.Lying to children makes them more likely to lie

B.Yong children are more likely to lie

C.Children can’t resist the temptation from candy

D.Children are more likely to be cheated

        31. What do children probably think if you lie to them, according to Carver?

        A. It is OK to tell lies B. Lying is a bad thing

        C. Those who lie should be punished D. Adults are dishonest
