I don’t mean to sound easy about the economy and the tough times people are going through. The situation is avery serious one, but, perhaps, these rough economic times can teach us all a thing or two about what is reallyimportant in life.
The things I have come to love and cherish, and the things which always seem to calm my spirit and soul, arethe simple things in life. I would much rather take a peaceful walk at our local nature center than to spend anexpensive day being prepared at the place for relaxing and health improving. And, hey, my car may be seven yearsold, but it has never given me any problems and it gets me to the same place a brand new Lexus would.
And what makes simple and cost-effective activities much more enjoyable for me is to share them with myfamily. We love getting together just to share each other’s company. We don’t have to go to a theme park or even toa movie to have a good time. We love watching DVDs, eating popcorn and joking around. We also love to take longwalks in nature with our special glasses and our cameras capturing the beauty of God’s creation and taking goofypictures of ourselves.
I was kidding my fourteen-year-old great-niece the other day, asking her what she was going to get me forChristmas. Her immediate and worried response was that she did not have any money. Amanda is a wonderful poet,so I told her to “just write me a poem entitled, Aunt La Verne”. Things, gifts, activities don’t have to involve money.A simple poem from Amanda’ heart will give me warm feelings for the rest of my life, and I hope Amanda learneda lesson from our little encounter as well.
I focus on what I have instead of on what I don’t have in life. Houses, jobs, and health will come and go, butthe love and enjoyment of family can support me through any kind of situation, including a rough economy.21. What can these rough economic times teach us?
A. One or two useful skills. B. The very serious situation.
C. One or two things about life. D. All the important things in life.
22. What lesson will Amanda learn from her encounter with her aunt?
A. Her aunt was fond of presents. B. A simple poem will make a big gift.
C. Her aunt liked her poem very much. D. Money is very important in life.
23. The passage mainly tells us _____.
A. how serious the economic situation is B. how to choose a present
C. what nature brings us D. what’s really important in life

Exactly five years ago, on New Year’s Eve, I was invited to a children’s ball by a man high up in thebusinessworld, who had his connections, his circle of acquaintances, and his close friends. So it seemed as thoughthe children’s ball was merely an excuse for the parents to come together and discuss matters of interest tothemselves, quite innocently and casually.
I was an outsider, and , as I had no special matters to air, I was able to spend the evening independently of the others. There was another gentleman present who like me had just stumbled upon (偶然發(fā)現(xiàn)) this affair of domestic happiness. He was the first to attract my attention. His appearance was not that of a man of noble birth. He was tall, rather thin, very serious, and well dressed. Obviously he had no heart for the family celebration. Theinstant he went off into a corner by himself the smile disappeared from his face, and his thick dark brows knitted into a frown(皺眉). He knew no one except the host and showed every sign of being bored to death, though bravely keeping the role of thorough enjoyment to the end. Later I learned that he was a provincial, had come to the capitalon some important business, had brought a letter of recommendation to our host, and our host had taken him underhis protection, not at all with love. It was merely out of politeness that he had invited him to the children’s ball.
They did not play cards with him. They did not offer him cigars. No one entered into conversation with him. Possibly they recognized the bird by its feathers from a distance. Thus, my gentleman, not knowing what to do with his hands, was compelled(迫使) to spend the evening stroking (撫摸) his whiskers(胡須). His whiskers were really fine, but he stroked them so eagerly that one got the feeling that the whiskers had come into the world first and afterwards the man in order to stroke them.
24. According to the author, the real purpose of the children ball was that ______.
A. the parents wanted to make their children happy
B. the parents had a chance to meet and socialize
C. the host hoped to make the guests happy
D. the host wanted to give a welcome to an important guest
25.The gentleman was unhappy because ______.
A. he was one of the poor relatives of the host B. he was from the countryside
C. he was trying to do some business with the host D. he was not really welcome in the ball
26.The gentleman touched his whiskers eagerly just because ______.
A. he liked his whiskers very much B. he had the habit of doing so
C. he was embarrassed in the ball D. he felt uneasy wearing whiskers
27. When the author was telling the story, he was ______.
A. humorous B. serious C. joking D. doubtful
C
Reading may be fundamental, but how the brain gives meaning to letters on a page has been a mystery. Twonew studies fill in some details on how the brains of efficient readers handle words. One of the studies, published inthe April 30 Neuron, suggests that a visual-processing area of the brain recognizes common words as whole units.Another study, published online April 27 in PLOSONE, makes it known that the brain operates two fast parallelsystems for reading, linking visual recognition of words to speech.
Maximilian Riesenhuber, a neuroscientist at GeorgetownUniversity in Washington, D.C., wanted to know whether the brain reads words letter by letter or recognizes words as whole objects. He and his colleagues showed sets of real words or nonsense(無意義的詞語)words to volunteers undergoing fMRI scans. The words differed inonly one letter, such as “farm” and “form” or “soat” and “poat”, or were completely different, such as “farm” and“coat”or “poat” and “hime”. The researchers were particularly interested in what happens in the visual word formarea, or VWFA, an area on the left side of the brain just behind the ear that is involved in recognizing words.
Riesenhuber and his colleagues found that neurons(神經(jīng)元)in the VWFA respond strongly to changes in real words. Changing “farm” to “form”, for example, produced as great a change in activity as changing “farm” to“coat”, the team reports in Neuron. The area responded slowly to single-letter changes in made-up words.
The data suggests that readers grasp real words as whole objects, rather than focusing on letters or lettercombinations. And as a reader’s exposure to a word increases, the brain comes to recognize the shape of the word.Meaning is passed on after recognition in the brain, Riesenhuber says.
The researchers don’t yet know how longer and less familiar words are recognized, or if the brain can betrained to recognize nonsense words as a unit.
28. Riesenhuber’s research probably focuses on whether the brain ______.
A. recognizes words as a unit or reads them letter by letter.
B. operates two fast parallel systems for reading
C. takes longer to read less familiar words or not
D. handles nonsense words as a unit
29. Riesenhuber and his colleagues carried out their research by ______.
A. giving pairs of real words totally different B. arranging the words in different order
C. showing pairs of different words D. making volunteers read some longer words
30. Riesenhuber’s research is significant in that it shows how the brain ______.
A. responds to familiar words B. relates meaning to letters
C. recognizes the form of a word D. reacts to made-up words

第二節(jié):概要寫作(滿分25分)
閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容寫一篇60詞左右的內(nèi)容概要。
Australians eat whole world’s food
I can’t decide what I want to eat for dinner tonight.
Do I feel like Italian food or Thai food? Indian or Chinese? American or Turkish? I don’t need to travel aroundthe world; all these choices are available in a typical inner city in Australia.
Australian food has many different cultural influences. Over the past century, people from many countries have come to Australia. These migrants (移民) have contributed to the melting pot that is Australian food.
“Whether you’re after modern, traditional or exotic flavors, Australia’s eclectic dining scene offers a wide range of the world’s great cuisines (菜肴),” the Visit Victoria website noted.
Some Australian families may restrict their diet to the basic “meat and three veg” meal: one sort of meat(chicken, beef, lamb, and so on), along with three different types of vegetables (usually potatoes, peas and carrots). But most people enjoy the variety.
If I were to pick four meals that every Australian eats, they would be Italian spaghetti bolognaise (意式肉醬面), Chinese fried rice, British fish and chips and Thai green chicken curry.
Chinese students in Australia find it easy to get a Chinese meal. Cities like Sydney have large Chinatowns, butmany towns in the country also have a Chinese takeaway restaurant.
Popular Australian-Chinese dishes may not always seem authentic – Honey Chicken, for example – but youcan still find dumplings and noodles.
Even so, Australia has its own, very Australian savory (可口的) dish: meat pie. It’s a real classic! The dish is on the menu at every house party and sporting venue (場所), and is eaten every morning after a big night.
And who could forget desserts? We Australians often fight with New Zealanders over who has the rightful claim to the Pavlova (奶油蛋白甜餅) and Lamington (巧克力椰絲方形蛋糕) desserts, both equally delicious and sweet.

M: I think I’ll make some plans for my upcoming vacation with my wife.

W: Oh, that’s right. I forgot we have Monday off. Well, in that case, no, I’m not going to take my violin lesson. My cousin has a car, so maybe we can persuade my parents to let us take a day to get out of the city…You know, go hiking or something.
M:That’s what I’m doing. A couple of the guys and I are leaving early Saturday morning to go camping. We’re not coming back until Monday night. I can’t wait!

Parents ,welcome to our open house. I’m Angela Mathews, the principal of
BeanstalkAcademy. I was one of the original founders of the school fifteen years ago, and
I’ve been the principal for the last five. Perhaps most importantly, two of my children have
gone to school here, so I can understand what this must be like from your point of view.
Choosing a preschool for your little ones is a big decision, especially for first-time parents.
Many couples are not quite ready to leave their children in the hands of total strangers.
My job, in addition to showing you our beautiful campus, is to make you feel like you can
trust me and my staff with your kids. Our head teachers all have at least a master’s degree
and eight years of experience with young children. Our teachers’ assistants all have a
college education and four years of experience. There will be three adults per group of
children, and we make sure to keep each group at or below twenty kids. Our full-time staff
also includes a nurse, a nutrition expert, a child psychologist and a security guard. I’d like
to tell you a little more about each of our programs: 0—2 years old, 2—3 years old, and
3—4 years old. But before I do that, I’d like to introduce Judy woodman, whose daughter
Catherine is currently in the EarlyYears Program. Judy?
