Living in Melbourne
Josh: Hey, Shirley. You're from Australia, right?
Shirley: Yeah, that's right. From Down Under.
Josh: Okay. Are you from Sydney?
Shirley: No. I'm not from Sydney. Actually, I'm fromMelbourne.
Josh: Melbourne?
Shirley: Hmm.
Josh: Okay. So are there any nice parts in Melbourne?
Shirley: Well, you know Josh, Melbourne is a great city. And one of the reasons is becausethere are lots of parks. There's a really big park right in the center of the city.
Josh: Is it beautiful?
Shirley: It's gorgeous. It's called the Botanical Gardens. And they have plants from manydifferent places around the world. And there's a lake, a small lake in the center. But what I reallylove about that park is at one time of the year, they have lots of big fruit bats that fly into thepark and they hang upside down from the trees. They are really huge, like big sacks. It's verycool.
Josh: That sounds beautiful.
Shirley: Yeah.
Josh: So is there good shopping in your city?
Shirley: Oh, there's great shopping in Melbourne. You know, Melbourne has people from manydifferent countries. So we have a great variety of things; and clothing, cars, coffee shops, foods from many different countries. So it's a great place to shop.
Josh: Wonderful. What about housing? Is there cheap housing or is it really expensive?
Shirley: Well, it's not cheap but it's not as expensive as Sydney. Sydney is the biggest city inAustralia. It's very expensive to live. But in Melbourne, hmm, the housing is so-so.
Josh: How do you get around in Melbourne? Do you take the bus?
Shirley: You can take the bus but Melbourne has something very special that no other city inAustralia has. We have a tram system. I think they're called trolley cars in America, maybe.
Josh: Yeah, that sounds familiar.
Shirley: Yeah. Well, Melbourne has a really big tram system so you can go lots of places in thecity by tram. It's really good fun.
Josh: What about the tram? Is it expensive?
Shirley: Not so expensive; cheaper than the bus. Maybe about the same as the train. Cheaperthan a car. Probably, one of the cheapest ways to travel in the city.
Josh: What about schools in Melbourne. Is there a big university?

Josh: Okay.
Shirley: And they're kind of gold brown color.
Josh: Wow, did you see any other animals on your walk?
Shirley: No. I didn't see any other animals on the ground. But I did see a beautiful bird flying inthe sky.
Josh: Wow. Do you know what kind?
Shirley: I think it was an ibis. It's a big bird that usually walks in the water. It has long legs andit was white with a black head.

The Gilded Cage
Mike: So Ana, you're from Portugal, right?
Ana: Yes.
安娜:對(duì)。
Mike: I was wondering, I really like movies; are thereany good Portuguese movies that you canrecommend.
Ana: Well, actually, now that you mentioned it, there is a really nice Portuguese movie thatcame out recently, I think last year.
Mike: Oh really?
Ana: Yes, it's called the Gilded Cage.
Mike: The Gilded Cage?
Ana: Yes. It was actually filmed in French and Portuguese because it's about a Portuguesefamily living in France. So you can have it both in Portuguese and in French. It's veryinteresting.
Mike: Okay. And what's the story about?
Ana: Well, a lot of Portuguese people have had to move to different European countries to findjobs. So it's about one of these families. And the main couple, they moved to France to findjobs and now, I think, 14 years have passed and they have two children.
Mike: All right.
Ana: And yeah, the children were born in France, and raised French-Portuguese. And it's abouttheir internal conflict, about their identities and whether they are French or Portuguese. Soactually, the family is given the opportunity to go back to Portugal. So they need to thinkabout the pros and cons of leaving France; all the friendships that they have created, the jobsthat they have in contrast to – yes.
Mike: And this seems like an issue that many people will be able to identify with becausethere are many people leaving the country these days because of economic reasons, right?
Ana: Yes, I think so. I talked to some of my friends about it and my friends that are inPortugal, they think it's quite a funny movie. But my friends who've left the country, theyactually cried a lot during the movie because they could identify with the feelings of lonelinessand being away from your country, your culture, your family.
Mike: So you live outside of Portugal, how did you feel when you watched this movie?
Ana: Well, it's a comedy, so I laughed a lot. But there were some difficult moments actuallywhere I felt that my personal feelings and my personal experience were being targeted or just, you know, those issues of how I feel about my country and how I feel about living outside ofPortugal.
Mike: So it stirred some strong emotions for you.
Ana: Yes. It was very difficult actually. And I couldn't stop thinking about the movie in the nextfew days. And it also helped me think where I was in my life now and whether I would go back.So for me, it was also a turning point.
Mike: All right. That sounds like a very good movie. Would you recommend it to people whoare not Portuguese as well?
Ana: I do. I think that for most people who leave their countries, these people, they shared thefeeling, they always leave something behind. So I think it will be able to reach differentaudiences from different countries.
Mike: All right. So for anyone feeling a little homesick, it's a good movie to watch.
Ana: Yes.
安娜:對(duì)。
