地鐵是沿著地面鐵路系統(tǒng)的形式逐步發(fā)展形成的一種用電力牽引的快速大運(yùn)量城市軌道交通模式，其線路通常敷設(shè)在地下隧道內(nèi)，有的在城市中心以外，從地下轉(zhuǎn)到地面或高架橋上敷設(shè)方式。除了上述的地下鐵以外，也包括高架鐵路(Elevated railway)或路面上鋪設(shè)的鐵路。因此，地鐵是路權(quán)專有的，無(wú)平交，這也是地鐵區(qū)別于輕軌交通系統(tǒng)的根本性的標(biāo)志。
