        Life is the Cookie

One of my patients, a successful businessman, tells me thatbefore his cancer he would become depressed unless thingswent a certain way. Happiness was "having the cookie." If youhad the cookie, things were good.

If you didn't have the cookie, life wasn't worth a damn. Unfortunately, the cookie kept changing.

Some of the time it was money, sometimes power, sometimes sex. At other times, it was the newcar, the biggest contract, the most prestigious address.

A year and a half after his diagnosis of prostate cancer he sits shaking his head ruefully. "It's like Istopped learning how to live after I was a kid.

When I give my son a cookie, he is happy. If I take the cookie away or it breaks, he is unhappy.

But he is two and a half and I am forty-three. It's taken me this long to understand that the cookiewill never make me happy for long.

The minute you have the cookie it starts to crumble or you start to worry about it crumbling orabout someone trying to take it away from you.

You know, you have to give up a lot of things to take care of the cookie, to keep it from crumblingand be sure that no one takes it away from you.

You may not even get a chance to eat it because you are so busy just trying not to lose it.

Having the cookie is not what life is about." My patient laughs and says cancer has changed him.

For the first time he is happy. No matter if his business is doing well or not, no matter if he wins orloses at golf. "

Two years ago, cancer asked me, 'Okay, what's important? What is really important?' Well, life isimportant.

Life. Life any way you can have it, life with the cookie, life without the cookie. Happiness does nothave anything to do with the cookie; it has to do with being alive. Before, who made the time?" Hepauses thoughtfully. "Damn, I guess life is the cookie."

        Keep Walking in Sunshine

Years of storms had taken their toll on the old windmill. Its wheel, rusted and fallen, lay silent in the lush bluegrass. Its onceanimated silhouette was now a tall motionless steeple in thetwilight sun.

I hadn't walked across our old farm in fifteen years. Yet the sensations came flooding back. I couldsmell the freshness of new mown alfalfa. I could feel the ping of the ice cold summer rain, and thesun's sudden warmth on my wet shoulders when it reappeared after a brisk July thunderstorm.

Rain or shine, I used to walk this path each day to see Greta. She always made me smile, evenafter Sis and I had just had a big squabble. I would help Greta with her chores. Then we would visitover a generous helping of her delicious homemade chocolate cookies and ice cream. Beingconfined to a wheel chair didn‘t stop Greta from being a fabulous cook.

Greta gave me two of the greatest gifts I‘ve ever received. First, she taught me how to read. Shealso taught me that when I forgave Sis for our squabbles, it meant I wouldn‘t keep feeling like avictim. Instead, I would feel sunny.Mr. Dinking, the local banker, tried to foreclose on Greta's houseand land after her husband passed away. Thanks to Pa and Uncle Johan, Greta got to keepeverything. Pa said that it was the least he could do for someone talented enough to teach me toread!

Soon folks were coming from miles around to buy Greta's homemade cakes, pies, breads, cookies, cider, and ice cream. Hank, the grocery store man, came each week to stock his shelves and bringGreta supplies.

Greta even had me take a big apple pie to Mr. Dinking who became one of her best customers andfriends. That‘s just how Greta was. She could turn anyone into a friend!

Greta always said, "Dear, keep walking in sunshine!" No matter how terrible my day started, Ialways felt sunny walking home from Greta's house-even beneath the winter starlight.

I arrived at Greta's house today just after sunset. An ambulance had stopped a few feet from herdoor, it's red lights flashing. When I ran into the old house, Greta recognized me right away.

She smiled at me with her unforgettable twinkling blue eyes. She was almost out of breath whenshe reached out and softly touched my arm. Her last words to me were "Dear, keep walking insunshine!"

I'm sure that Greta is walking in the brightest sunshine she's ever seen. And, I'm sure that sheheard every word I read at her memorial service.

I chose a beautiful verse by Leo Buscaglia. It's one that Greta taught me to read many years ago…

"Love can never grow old. Locks may lose their brown and gold. Cheeks may fade and hollowgrow. But the hearts that love will know, never winter's frost and chill, summer's warmth is in themstill."

        “愛能歷久常新。華發(fā)或會失去原有的光彩。雙頰或會日顯消瘦黯淡。然而,有愛的心中,從無寒冬霜冰,只有夏之溫?zé)帷?rdquo;

        The Secret of Happiness

        幸福的秘訣

Once there lived a king of great strength and wealth.Yet he wasnot happy.

He told his servants to find him things to make him happy, buteach came back saying

"Noting in the world can match the wonderful things you have already."

Then in that land, there lived a poor man with a patch over one eye and a crutch to help himwalk.Although he had little,he was always happy.

When the king heard of this,he asked the man to teach him his secret. "I never push." the manreplied,"and I never rush."

"Most of all,I never wish for too much." Then he smiled and was gone.

If you would make a man happy,do not add to his possessions but subtract from his desires.
