Young ladies' New Language

The use of deferential(敬重的)language is symbolic of the Confucian ideal of the woman, which domiantes conservative gender norms in Japan. This ideal presents a woman whowithdraws quietly to the background, subordinating her life and needs to those of her familyand its male head. She is a dutiful daughter, wife, and mother, master of the domestic arts.

The typical refined Japanese woman excels in modesty and delicacy; she "treads softly(謹言慎行) in the world," elevating feminine beauty and grace to an art form.

Nowadays, it is commonly observed that young women are not conforming to the femininelinguistic(語言的) ideal. They are using fewer of the very deferential "women's" forms, andeven using the few strong forms that are known as "men's." This, of course, attractsconsiderable attention and has led to an outcry in the Japanese media against thedefeminization of women's language.

The fact that young Japanese women are using less deferential language is a sure sign ofchange — of social change and of linguistic change. But it is most certainly not a sign of the"masculization" of girls. In some instances, it may be a sign that girls are making the sameclaim to authority as boys and men, but that is very different from saying that they are tryingto be "masculine."

Katsue Reynolds has argued that girls nowadays are using more assertive language in order tobe able to compete with boys in schools and out. Social change also brings not simply differentpositions for women and girls, but different relations to life stages, and adolescent girls areparticipating in new subcultural forms. Thus what may, to an older speaker, seem like"masculine" speech may seem to an adolescent like "liberated" or "hip" speech.

        Colleges: Consumer Products or Investments?

There are few more sobering online activities than entering data into college-tuition calculatorsand gasping as the Web spits back a six-figure sum.

But economists say families about to go into debt to fund four years of partying, as well asstudying, can console themselves with the knowledge that college is an investment that, unlikemany bank stock, should yield huge dividends.

A 2008 study by two Harvard economists notes that the "labor-market premium to skill"-or theamount college graduates earned that's greater than what high-school graduate earned-decreased for much of the 20th century, but has come back with a vengeance(報復性地)sincethe 1980s.

There's no question that going to college is a smart economic choice. But a look at the strangevariations in tuition reveals that the choice about which college to attend doesn't come downmerely to dollars and cents.

Does going to Columbia University yield a 40% greater return than attending the University ofColorado at Boulder as an out-of-state student? Probably not. Does being an out-of-statestudent at the University of Colorado at Boulder yield twice the amount of income as being anin-state student there? Not likely.

No, in this consumerist age, most buyers aren't evaluating college as an investment, but ratheras a consumer product-like a car or clothes or a house. And with such purchases, price is onlyone of many crucial factors to consider.

So which is it? Is college an investment product like a stock or a consumer product like a car?In keeping with the automotive world's hottest consumer trend, maybe it's best tocharacterize is as a bybird(混合動力汽車): an expensive consumer product that, over time, will pay rich dividends.

Girls' Waistlines Is Rising

Girls' waistlines have expanded by almost four inches in 30 years, figures show.

Rising levels of obesity means that the average 11-year-old's waist is more than 27.6in,compared to 23.2in during the late 1970s.

She now has the same size waist as a boy of the same age.

Although boy's waistlines have also expanded, they have not grown to the same extent, risingto 27.6in compared to 24.2in during 1978.

The figures are further evidence that young women are more likely to become dangerouslyoverweight than men.

The latest measurements were taken from 2,500 children aged 4-17 using a 3D scanner - andcompared to readings taken from more than 8,000 children measured in 1978.

Compiled by market research firm Select Research, the readings are being used by storesincluding Asda to adjust clothes sizing for children.

Youngsters are getting taller too. An average 11-year-old girl is almost 4ft 11in, compared withjust over 4ft 9in in 1978. The average boy of 11 is around 4ft 10in, up from 4ft 9in.

Richard Barnes, MD of Select Research, said it was too early to draw conclusions on childhoodobesity trends from the data.

He said:" The increases in waist circumference since 1978 show that children have got bigger. However, invreases in height and chest size show that children in the UK have grown over theyears in many ways."

"Using BMI to measure obesity in children should not be relied upon as an accurate indicatorof risk to health as both components, height and weight, are variables."

"Measuring body shape in 3D and where a child's weight is distributed may provide us with newinsights on the actual risk to health and change perceptions of what health interventions arerequired."

"Shape GB is a survey for retailers, but we will be using the data in due course to develop BVIthresholds for childhood obestiy."
