More than nine out of 10 young people expose themselves to the blue light from smartphones before bed, causing problems with sleep. A new survey also shows more than 28 million people in the UK regularly get no more than seven hours sleep a night. Prof Richard Wiseman, who commissioned the YouGov poll described the findings as "extremely worrying". Of the 2,149 adults questioned, 78% said they used electronic devices before going to bed. This rose to 91% among the 18 to 24-year-olds questioned in the survey.
Getting less than seven hours sleep a night is below the recommended guidelines, and is associated with a range of problems, including an increased risk of weight gain, heart attacks, diabetes and cancer. "The blue light from these devices suppresses(壓制)the production of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin, so it's important to avoid them before bed time," said Prof Richard Wiseman, from the University of Hertfordshire.
Everyone needs different amounts of sleep, but adults are generally thought to require a minimum of seven to eight hours a night. Teenagers are recommended to get more, about nine hours. The proportion(比例)of people thought to be getting too little sleep had risen by a fifth since a "bedroom poll" conducted last year by the National Sleep Foundation.
Last week revealed opticians were warning that overuse of smartphones may be increasing people's risk of eye damage. Optician Andy Hepworth said: "Blue violet light is potentially harmful to the back of your eyes. "So over a long period of time it can damage your eyes. When you're looking at a smart phone, the light peaking out of that is blue violet. The news came as a survey of 2,000 people suggests under-25s check their phones 32 times a day.

Vacation is a time for refreshment. In work, we are often called to think. Sometimes, it’s good to give our brains a rest. Without a break, we may not be able to perform up to our potential. This can be a problem, not only for the employee, but for the employer as well.
“The main benefit of vacation is for the worker to come back energized,” says Weaver. “If they haven’t had a break, then they’re not coming back with new energy. They haven’t had a chance to step back and get perspective(遠(yuǎn)景), and come back with renewed enthusiasm.”
Long working hours without a break, insecurity(不安)about one’s job, and other work-related worries can lead to burnout and stress. Humans can usually adapt to pressure, but not for a limitless amount of time.
“It is a problem of relating good workers and having them loyal to the firm while they’re there,” says David Maume, PhD, professor of sociology at the University of Cincinnati. He says burnout can also affect employees’ productivity, creativity, and effectiveness.
In addition, high levels of stress are likely to be precursors (前兆) to depression, which can hit both the employer and employee’s pocketbook. Even people who manager to remain productive at work can have problems. If they’re always at work, then they’re not with their family and friends. If they’re working while on vacation, for the time that they’re on the job, they’re not really present.
An unbalanced emphasis on work can strain family and social life. When you come up for air, you may see that you’re alone, or that your relationships have gone on without you.
32. The underlined word “there” in the fourth paragraph probably refers to ________.
A. the vacation B. the company
C. the university D. the home
33. What’s the main benefit of a vacation?
A. The worker can come back with new energy.
B. The worker can step back and get more excited
C. The manager can be more creative.
D. The worker can adapt to pressure much better.
34. When a worker is always at work, he is likely to get more and more__________ .
A. energetic B. absent-minded C. skillful D. active
35 Which of the following is the best title of the text?
A. Why the workers need a vacation.
B. How to spend the vacation effectively.
C. How to deal with the daily pressure.
D. Why the workers need new energy.

Getting older
No one really knows how and why people change as they get older. 36 . Aging is a complex and varied process that varies in how it affects different people and organs. In fact, even in one person, different organ systems “age” at different rate.
At a certain point in our lives our body systems will begin to weaken. 37 . It may become more difficult for us to see and hear. The slow change of aging causes our bodies to lose some of their ability to bounce back from disease and injury. In order to live longer, we have always tried to slow or stop this change that leads us toward the end of our lives.
38 . A good diet plays an important role. The amount and the type of exercise we get are another two factors. 39 . But scientists studying the aging problem want to know: Why do people grow old? They hope that by studying the aging medical science they may be able to make the length of life longer.
40 . Many consider the later part of life to be the best time for living. Physical activity may become less, but often we get better understanding of the world and ourselves.
What we consider the old age now may only be middle-aged some day soon who knows, with so many advances in medical science happening so quickly, life length may one day be measured in centuries, rather than in years!
A. Our living condition is yet another.
B. Many factors decide our health.
C. Our strength may become weaker.
D. As for diet, people are advised to eat less salt and sugar.
E. There is nothing to be afraid of as the old age comes.

書(shū)面表達(dá)
How to communicate with our parents
Hello, everyone, I’d like to share with you my ideas about the topic of communicating with our parents..
Parents are the people who love us most, so it’s necessary to keep a good relationship with them. Here are my ideas on how to make it easier to communicate with parents.
First, we should respect and trust our parents. Don’t be rude to them even if they have done something wrong. They have experienced more and always try their best to protect us from dangers. Second, if we often talk with them about our life and experiences, we will know each other better. What’s more, we can often tell our parents how much we love them. Third, if sometimes we don’t agree with our parents’ decision, we should try to put ourselves into their shoes and we will soon understand them. Remember that what they really want is only the best for us.
Thank you for listening.

M:Yes,it is. There are many shopping malls.
M:What's' the building on the right?
W: Oh,that's the department store. It sells clothes, furniture and food, almost everything.
ICI:Really? It's wonderful. That means I can save a lot of time since I can buy what I want all within the same building. I need some clothes.
W:Then you should go to Lincoln Street. There are a lot of men's clothing stores.
M:I see. I'll go there. Look. that's a beautiful theater.
W:Yes,and tonight there is a new play. And the building next to the theater is a hotel.
M:Is that a post office across the street?
W:No,it's the city hall. The post office is at the end of the street on the right.

M:Excuse me,madam. Can you tell me how to get to Sun College? I'm walking.
W:Well,I think the simplest way for you is to go up to Main Street over there. Turn left on Main Street and keep going for about 20 minutes. When you get to Water Square, turn right. Keep on,past the Mass Hospital,to the end of the road, and then take a left turn. You'll be on Rain Avenue. Walk two blocks until you see the Farmers' Bank. Cross the street and almost immediately take a left turn again. The entrance to Sun College is down a few yards on your right. Can you remember all that?
M:I guess I got e little lost in the middle.
W:Well, perhaps the best thing for you is to find your way up to Mass Hospital and ask again.
M:OK. Thanks a lot.
W:My pleasure.

As one of the largest dealers of garments in Australia,Mr Brown has been one of our faithful business partners ever since we entered into business relations in 1998. Now I propose a toast to the successful visit of our friends.
