Work and Pleasure工作和娛樂(lè)
To be really happy and really safe, one ought to haveat least two or three hobbies, and they must all bereal. It is no use starting late in life to say: “I will takean interest in this or that.” Such an attempt onlyaggravates the strain of mental effort. A man mayacquire great knowledge of topics unconnected withhis daily work, and yet hardly get any benefit or relief. It is no use doing what you like; youhave got to like what you do. Broadly speaking, human being may be divided into three classes:those who are toiled to death, those who are worried to death, and those who are bored todeath. It is no use offering the manual laborer, tired out with a hard week’s sweat and effort, the chance of playing a game of football or baseball on Saturday afternoon. It is no useinviting the politician or the professional or business man, who has been working orworrying about serious things for six days, to work or worry about trifling things at theweekend.
It may also be said that rational, industrious, useful human beings are divided into twoclasses: first, those whose work is work and whose pleasure is pleasure; and secondly, thosewhose work and pleasure are one. Of these the former are the majority. They have theircompensations. The long hours in the office or the factory bring with them as their reward, notonly the means of sustenance, but a keen appetite for pleasure even in its simplest and mostmodest forms. But Fortune’s favored children belong to the second class.Their life is a naturalharmony. For them the working hours are never long enough. Each day is a holiday, andordinary holidays when they come are grudged as enforced interruptions in an absorbingvacation. Yet to both classes the need of an alternative outlook, of a change of atmosphere, ofa diversion of effort, isessential. Indeed, it may well be that those whose work is their pleasureare those who most need the means of banishing it at intervals from their minds.
two gates there are for dreams," said penelope to odysseus after his ten years’ wandering had ended. "one made for horn and one of for ivory. the dreams that pass through the carved ivory delude and bring us tales that turn to naught;those that can come through polished horn accomplish real things whenever seen."
People and opportunities 人與機(jī)會(huì)
The lack of opportunity is ever the excuse of aweak, vacillating mind. Opportunities! Every life is fullof them. Every lesson in school or college is anopportunity. Every examination is a chance in life.Every businesstransaction is an opportunity-anopportunity to be polite, an opportunity to bemanly, an opprtunity to behonest, an opprtunity tomake friends. Every proof of confidence in you is agreat opportunity. Every responsibility thrust upon your strength and your honor is priceless.Existence is the privilege of effort, andwhen that privilege is met like a man, opportunities tosucceed along the line of your aptitude will come faster than you can use them.
Young men and women, why do you stand here all the day idle? Was the land all occupiedbefore you were born?Has the earth ceased to yield its increase? Are the seats all taken? Thepositions all filled? the chances all gone? are the resources of your country fully developed? Arethe secrets of nature all mastered? Isthere no way in which you can utilize these passingmoments to improve yourself or benefit another? Don't wait for your opportunity. Make it,make it as Napoleon made his in a hundred "impossible" situations. Make it, as all leaders ofmen , in war and in peace, have made their chaces of success. Make it, as every man must, whowould accomplish anything worth the effort. Glolden opportunities are nothing to laziness, butindustry makes the commmonest chances golden.
