More students are avoiding physics during thenational university entrance exam, or gaokao, whichcould cause a decline in expertise, China's Scienceand Technology Daily reported.

Following new regulations on the gaokao in ZhejiangProvince and Shanghai, students are required to takeexams on three compulsory subjects - Chinese, mathematics and a foreign language.

But they can choose three optional ones from politics, history, geography, physics, chemistry, biology and science in other tests.

Only about 80,000 of the total 291,300 test takers in Zhejiang took physics last year, Chinesemedia reported, while in Shanghai only 30 percent of candidates did the same.

"Compared with other subjects, physics is more difficult," said Sun Guobiao, a veteran physicsteacher in Zhejiang's Keqiao Middle School, who added that in the gaokao scoring system, it isdifficult to get high marks with fewer students taking the test.
浙江省柯橋中學資深物理教師孫國標表示:“相對于其他科目,物理學科比較難是主因。”他還表示,在現(xiàn)如今的高考體制下,考生基數(shù)越少,想得到高分越難。
Beijing is also trying to promote new gaokao regulations this year, so some students arethinking of giving up physics, according to Chinese media.
國內(nèi)媒體報道稱,由于北京也試圖在今年實行全新高考制度,所以許多考生也開始考慮棄考物理。
"If the situation continues, many excellent physics teachers will disappear in future, which willbe a crushing blow to the subject," Sun said.
孫國標說:“如果這種局面持續(xù)下去,未來我們會失去一大批優(yōu)秀的物理教師,這對物理領(lǐng)域來說也將是一個毀滅性的打擊。”
